Why not?! We were married a few months ago in 2007, and this is a super-long delayed honeymoon.
Well, a few other factors went into it, but we want to see things around this planet. One of our wedding vows was to travel the world together. So actually, this is a marital obligation, people.
Plus, we are in the unique situation of being in between careers. John recently retired (!) and will begin his next career in law upon our return. After I left my media career, I began embarking on a new adventure in interior design.
No kids, no jobs, no reason why not to do this! Upon planning, we discussed making the trip an entire year, but cut it back to 5 months for a number of reasons (cost, time, contacts in other countires on our wish-list itinerary). All in all, we're happy with the itinerary we've chosen, as it bases around visiting countries where we know someone who may be able to help us navigate our way or may want to even socialize with us. However, we're skipping over many areas of Europe (hello, Scandanavia?) and ALL the Asisan nations on our original one-year list. So, be prepared for us to be making plans for another adventure overseas in the future.
When we come back, after 5 months abroad, we hope to be better people with a heightened sense of this world that we live in. That, and we should have some stories that will make you pretty jealous.
