The Practical Nomad was read before we left the States, but we've referred to it since, and have been using many of its ideas

Whitney read this and loved it. Gave it to John, who promptly exclaimed it was a "chick book" and then left it in our Vienna hotel. Whit disagrees and highly recommends
-
John's read, purchased at a bookstore in Rome's Fuimicino Airport

Read by John years ago, who purchased for Whit to read on this trip. An amazing sotry about the human spirit; a must-read for anyone who has a fear of drowining, tigers or lonliness. Er.....

-
Lent from Jonathan... A book at adolescent reading level with a very grown-up message
-
Lent from Whit's sister Nicole. An oldie-but-goodie from our high school's summer reading list. It's a good re-read...
-
John's Xmas gift to Whit. Amazingshort stories by the author of "Brokeback Mountain"
-
Recommended by friend Diamond Joe. John's been loving this book about the, black swan, a large-impact, hard-to-predict, and rare event beyond the realm of normal expectations. Or, is it?
-
True story that inspired Melville's story MOBY DICK, about a ship of Nantucket whalers whose boat sinks when a whale destroys it. John's read, Whit opted out, due to the cannibalism. Ick
-
Another book of short stories. Eerie, haunting and quite upsetting, Whit's read in Australia
-
An amazing story from South Africa's recent history... the book was given to us by dear Hayley, upon our departure from Cape Town. Thank you, Hayley - it is a truly amazing read!!!!
-
John Saw a friend on the dive boat reading this. The gentleman said it was the best book he'd ever read, so John immediately went out and got it. He read it in two nites. Very smart, provocative reading. Bring a dictionary as well. Just a fantastic (but dark) narrative.
-
John's most recent bookstore impulse purchase....
-
Read in the first part of our New Zealand - to - Santiago flight. An "easy cheesy, classical serial killer" story, says JB.
-
Oh My God, you have to read this book. I picked this up as we departed New Zealand, knowing that English books won't be so easy to come by in South America. Well, this didn't last too long - I read it in 2.5 days. And, I'm a very slow reader, so you can imagine that I stayed up all night, pouring over this amazing story about family, crime, death, grief, the afterlife, ghosts. Dude, forget everything I'm saying - just go get it and read it!! - Whit

Unfortunately, this one started out strong, then lagged towards the end. It's a big book, and if you've got a long vacation or a lonely weekend, give it a try.
-
We found this Jack London oldie-but-goodie at the English table in a used bookstore on Santa Fe Avenue near our apartment. John finished it in three nights and gritted his teeth the whole time.
-
An entertaining and touching 'chick book' that Whitney grabbed at Buenos Aires' famed Walrus bookshop, which buys & sells English books. The story traced a dozen characters who are competing in an "Amazing Race"-like TV reality show. Fun, especially considering the trip we're wrapping up.
-
Picked out by Whitney for John at the Walrus English bookshop. John LOOOOOVES Cormac McCarthy... We saw No Country For Old Men last week at a movie theatre in our neighborhood (Spanish subtitles).
-
A must-read. Also purchased at Warus Bookshop in Bs As, this memoir is wonderfully told and extremely touching. Watch out, heartstrings.

Wow. If you like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, or if you enjoy memiors about the reckless life of a drugged-out rockstar, go ahead. Not exactly a family book, but Whit's devouring it.
