The gravesite of Hector Pieterson, a boy whose death marked the culmination of the Soweto Uprising. The boy was shot by police, and a photographer from a local paper took a photo of his sister and a friend carrying his body away from the gunfire. The photo publicized the tragedies happening to the people of Soweto, and Hector's name became synonymous with the injustices put upon blacks in the township.

Max and John drove through Soweto, Johannesburg's most famed township. Much of the struggle against Apartheid played out in the slums of Soweto, and the township was in a virtual state of war during the 1970's and 80's. Nowadays, Soweto is a mixture of rich suburbs and poor shanty dwellings. Pictured is the memorial for those who perished during conflict.
